The Museum of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in the basement of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Żoliborz. In the display case: the shirt, trousers and shoes that Father Jerzy was wearing at the time of his death. Also the tools of the crime: a militia baton, ropes and the stones that were tied to his legs before his body was thrown into the Vistula River.

A visit at Cinderella’s

From a warm stove in the village of Okopy Podlasie to the story: “We threw the body over the barrier to the river side, standing on the dam facing Włocławek.” The Żoliborz museum is a shocking tale about Cinderella – because that’s what the name “Popiełuszko” means in Belarusian.

The beatification of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko took place on 6th June 2010, at Piłsudski Square in Warsaw. The ceremony was presided over by the papal delegate, Archbishop Angelo Amato, representing Pope Benedict XVI.

Father Jerzy at the ends of the world

The cult of the blessed martyr from Poland is developing on all continents. He is prayed to by Filipinos, French, Americans, and even the people of Côte d’Ivoire, where he once wanted to go on a mission.

“It is so difficult today to maintain human dignity when a person is trampled upon and becomes a tool for labour. We must be strong with You, Jesus Christ, so as not to be crushed by those who wish to build our fatherland on what is earthly and transient,” he said to the participants of the first pilgrimage of workers to Jasna Góra. Today, these words resonate once again.

How our fathers came...

The first pilgrimages of working people to Jasna Góra were a social and religious phenomenon. Although their initiator, Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko, took part in only two of them, to this day they are associated with the steadfast spirit of the patron of Solidarity.

During his third pilgrimage to Poland in 1987, John Paul II prayed in silence for a long time at the grave of Father Jerzy. He did not deliver any speech; instead, he prayed on his knees, kissing and embracing the tombstone.

It does not expire

In the dark times of communism, Father Jerzy Popiełuszko consciously referred to the teachings of John Paul II. Alongside the words of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, the papal teachings became an important, almost indispensable element of his sermons in Warsaw’s Żoliborz.

The attitude and teachings of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko organised my values, set priorities, and helped me understand the purpose behind my actions.

I met Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko during confession in the church of St. Stanislaus Kostka in Żoliborz. he was very gentle, today I would say: full of love.

Professor Cesare Giacomo Zucconi is a historian and political scientist. He was born in London in 1962. He studied political science and the history of international relations at “La Sapienza” University in Rome. He is now a lecturer at “Friedrich Schiller” University in Jena, Germany. Zucconi is the author of books and articles on the history of Central and Eastern Europe, church history, conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue. He is a member of the Sant’Egidio Community.
